With pregnancy comes a surge of hormones.  Movies show the pregnant woman as unpredictable, emotional, and even in a rage.  Though it may not be to that extreme, women experience  a number of changes during pregnancy.  Some of the changes involve hormones.  Though hormones are most commonly associated with emotions, hormones are associated with other things as well, such as morning sickness.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin or HCG is the hormone that comes from the cells that make the placenta.  This hormone has been associated with morning sickness because morning sickness typically peaks when HCG is at a peak in the pregnancy.  This hormone can be detected at 11 days.  HCG is at its peak during the 8th to the 11th week.  Morning sickness symptoms tend to start at about 6 weeks and stop at about 12 weeks.

In a multiple birth pregnancy, these hormones are higher.  This would explain the old wives tale that the more severe your morning sickness, the higher your chances of having twins, triplets, or more.  If the hormone levels are higher with multiple births, and HCG contributes to morning sickness, the more you have in your system, the sicker you might feel.

There is a theory that when the baby is developing its organs and major systems, it is more likely to develop birth defects, so morning sickness is the body’s defense to keep harmful things from reaching the baby.  In this sense, doctors say that morning sickness is good for the baby and indicates that the baby is healthy.  The morning sickness ensures that only the purest nutrients make it to the baby, thus keeping it healthy.

Doctors also think that low blood sugar may contribute to morning sickness.  The hormones are rampaging through the body, this causes little food intake, your blood sugar drops and you feel sick again.  Knowing this, try eating a lot of small meals to ensure that your blood sugar doesn’t drop too low.

While morning sickness is quite annoying, if you think about it as a safety measure for your baby, it may help you bear it more.  You might also consider foods that bring it on, knowing that your body is extra protective against harmful things at this stage in your pregnancy.  It makes sense that the hormone that is produced from an active placenta would trigger the bodies natural defenses to protect the young.  With this understanding, maybe you won’t think of morning sickness with quite the negativity you did before.
