Morning Sickness can strike at any time of day. The effect of Hormones on Morning Sickness
Sep 06

Morning Sickness has been plaguing women since the dawn of time.  It is that nauseous feeling  during the first trimester of pregnancy.  It sometimes involves vomiting.  But we all hate it.  For one thing, it doesn’t only happen in the morning, it can happen all through out the day, and sometimes lasts all day long.  Unfortunately it doesn’t limit itself to the first trimester either.  It can last even longer in some women.  These three tips can help reduce the severity of your morning sickness.

First, some food and smells can bring on the morning sickness spells, so avoid them.  If you know that the smell of coffee makes you nauseous, try to avoid it.  Ask your significant other to get coffee from the nearest convenience store.  A helpful way to keep track of this is to keep a small notebook handy to write them down when you encounter them.  Some women feel nauseous with so many foods and smells, it is almost necessary to write them down in order to remember them.  It is also handy to give the list to your family members so they don’t accidentally bring you something on your list.

Next, if you have been having morning sickness and you know that as soon as you wake up it hits you, put some crackers by your bed.  Before you get out of bed, eat a few.  Salty foods, such as crackers and chips, have been shown to decrease the nausea and allow you to eat a proper meal.  You can carry crackers with you when you go out to ease the morning sickness that may hit you outside your house.  Don’t lay down after you eat.  Many people think, “Oh, I feel sick, I need to lay down.”  That is the last thing you should do.

Finally, stay out of the heat.  If you have been experiencing morning sickness, heat can make you feel worse.  If you know that heat makes you feel nauseous, stay out of the sun, avoid cooking on the stove, and use a sheet or light blanket in bed to keep from overheating in the night.  That is a good reason to get your loved ones to cook for you.  If you live alone, use the microwave instead.  It’s not always as good as a home cooked meal, but it sure beats feeling nauseous.

In conclusion, while morning sickness is a nuisance to say the least, there are some things you can do to help yourself.  Avoid food and smells that bring on morning sickness.  Eat crackers or chips when you feel your stomach begin to upset, and avoid heat.  Remember, it won’t last the whole pregnancy, usually, so keep telling yourself it will eventually stop.
